Bed Bugs! The words alone are enough to send chills down your spine. They haunt us at night, nesting in hidden parts of our beds waiting to feast on our blood while we sleep. Everyone has heard the horror stories of bed bugs not only infesting hotels, houses and apartments, but also movie theaters, clothing stores, buses, trains, and moving vans. Bed bugs can be found literally anywhere: their small size, reclusiveness, and ability to cling to most surfaces make them one of the best hitchhikers in the world. This project is not going to be a story about bed bugs, nor a feel-good technical bulletin about the pest control industry’s attempt to control this pest epidemic. This narrative is a guide for non- professionals to effectively treat and eliminate bed bugs without the need for professional help or pesticides. That’s right, you read that correctly, without pesticides.
This guide does not attempt to remove pesticides from the equation along a moral or environmental agenda. We are discussing bed bug control and truthfully, pesticides do not work very well with bed bugs. I have come to recognize that many times homeowners, tenants, landlords, building management and sometimes most unfortunately, pest control companies, rely solely on pesticides for control of a bed bug infestation. While pesticides can be effective in treating bed bugs when used properly, they often can do more harm than good because of being used improperly. Experience has shown me that the vast majority of store-bought bed bug sprays are more effective at spreading bed bug infestations than eliminating them. Fortunately there is a better way.
